Jorge León Interview

Jorge León is a graphic designer and art director based in Barcelona. He’s currently working with national and international clients across an open range of fields for Firma, an ad agency located in Barcelona. León’s simple approach to design is defined by a great sense of space and color.

Who are you?

My name is Jorge.

What do you do?

I work on both printed and digital media, focusing on identity, web design, editorial and typography. My field of work also includes signage systems, development of campaigns as well as other media communications.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the Canary Islands, which are a part of Spain. I’ve lived there from when I was born to 2010, when I moved to Barcelona. In my opinion, it is a nice and calm place to live, where you can enjoy the weather and nature.

However, there is not much design or art culture on the Canary Islands, which perhaps has pushed me to travel more and be interested in different cultures and disciplines. I grew up very close to the sea and was inspired by surf culture and its image.

So since I was a child I knew that this was what I’d like to do in the future!

When did you take your first big risk in life?

In my opinion I haven’t taken any big risks yet. I’ve just made a few small steps in order to get closer to what I like the most.

Why have you persisted with the path you’re currently on?

I’ve liked my path since I was young, so I just try to let it flow…

Who is someone you’d love to work with, but can’t?

I’d be glad to work with modest people who love what they do.

What are you working on now?

A rebranding of a skate wheel company in collaboration with Iris Tarraga, a couple of websites, an independent publication related to photography, and some personal projects.

Where do you spend most of your free time?

With my family and friends in no particular place. I’m really into surfing and I like to run a lot too, so I spend a lot of my free time doing sports.

On the other hand, travelling is one of my passions, so each time I have the opportunity to travel I pack my things and I get ready to discover new places.

What do you think is your biggest success so far?

I just try to enjoy every moment, so for me, the biggest success is to be here doing what I’m doing now, and maybe because of that I always want to learn more and get involved in new challenges and projects.

Like John Lennon said: “Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.”
